Topic
Learn to self-host for the cost of electricity and an old computer. Self-hosting can replace invasive and/or costly services such as Netflix, Google Cloud, Gmail, and Spotify or even to host your own website with full flexibility. Through the use of Yunohost this is viable to start with even for people starting out and simplifies many things for people with more experience. Background knowledge, such as understanding of Domain Name systems, IP protocols, system updates, and basic home networking will be the focus of the skill share as this knowledge is necessary to reasonably operate Yunohost.
A spare device will not be required for this workshop, but is recommended to bring as this will allow for troubleshooting specific to that device. All data will be cleared from such a device, but old laptops, old desktop computers, and Raspberry Pis are all suitable. Bringing a working laptop is also recommended as it’s more ergonomic for what we’ll be doing, though managing and configuring Yunohost from a tablet or is viable. Also, given 25 GB+ of free space, Yunohost can be run in a VM on such a laptop for purposes of learning in lieu of a spare device. If none of these are available to you, please contact the workshop runner in advance so that a device can be provided to you during the workshop.
For more details about Yunohost you can visit their website to learn what it’s about in advance.
